First opened in 1949, the Dossin Great Lakes Museum offers visitors a wide array of collections showcasing the role Detroit and the Great Lakes have played in maritime history. Featuring a variety of impressive maritime exhibits, such as Maritime Marvels, a look at recreational, navigational and engineering marvels ranging from birch bark canoes to the outboard motors, and The Gothic Room display, the restored smoking lounge from the S.S. City of Detroit II, exhibiting a luxurious oak and stain glass room from an elegant, turn-of-the-century Great Lakes luxury liner. This wonderful maritime museum is located on Belle Island, just over a mile from the Belle Island bridge.
