Since 1928, the Detroit Historical Museum, run by the city's historical society, has stood to preserve Detroit's rich history with its extensive array of collections and artifacts. Visitors to the museum will spend hours delving into such diverse collections as the Doorway to Freedom exhibit, highlighting Detroit's role in the Underground Railroad, the Military History collection, and a wonderful transportation exhibit, focusing on Detroit's important role in the evolution of transportation throughout the years. The museum also features impressive displays dedicated to Native American history, Detroit mayoral portraits, the evolution of fashion, and more. Conveniently located in Detroit's Cultural Center Historic District, the museum lies about two miles from downtown, next to the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Detroit Public Library and the Museum of Contemporary Art.
