Consecrated in 1849, the Mariners' Church of Detroit was built in the Gothic Revival style, designed to resemble the seamen's bethels of the east coast. With an independent congregation, free of denominational ties, the church was established to serve Detroit's maritime community and holds a Blessing of the Fleet every March, for those going to sea, as well as a Great Lakes Memorial Service each November, honoring seamen who have lost their lives. This beloved, 3,000 ton church made the pages of Life magazine following World War II when it was moved 900 feet from its original site to make way for the construction of the Detroit Civic Center. It now sits two blocks from the Detroit River in downtown Detroit, across from the Coleman A Young Municipal Center.
Free.
